Tauranga has one of the regions highlights right on its doorstep. Mount Maunganui has magnificent beaches, and is a popular option to try your hand at fishing, swimming, surfing or if hiking is more to your tastes, climb to the top of Mauao and enjoy the 360 degree views.
You can explore the waterways, and take in a cruise, learn to surf or go on a charter fishing trip on the ocean or go kayaking on one of the lakes or rivers. You can combine it with a visit to the glow worm caves in the region.
Or if you enjoy nature, the beautiful Kaiate Falls are close to town, and the scenic walk from the car park to the falls is well worth the trip itself. During summer, it is a popular choice for locals to have a swim in one of the many pools.
Tauranga has a bus system is managed by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council. The Bayhopper network, as it is known, runs 26 bus routes across the Tauranga urban area and Western Bay. Buses run seven days a week as well as public holidays (except Christmas Day and Good Friday).

Tauranga is home to the biggest shopping precinct in the Bay of Plenty region, with 300 boutique shops and department stores. You can pick up souvenirs, jewellery, clothing and homewares, or something unique.
Nearby Mount Maunganui offers a range of boutiques, and unique handmade art and craft stores. The Little Big Market takes place during the first Saturday of the month and the Gourmet Night Market is held throughout summer.
Tauranga Farmer's Market is held each Saturday at the Tauranga Primary School.
