What are housing options like in Wellington?

Wellington is a small, compact city and, given the topography, it is densely populated. The housing market is competitive and the cost to rent or buy is one of the highest in New Zealand.

There are many housing options, with inner-city apartments and townhouses to suburban houses and rural properties. Higher prices are generally found closer to the city centre.

While there aren't any specific expat areas, the suburbs Te Aro, Brooklyn, Mt Victoria, Oriental Bay, and Churton Park offer a quality lifestyle. If you are looking for a semi-rural lifestyle, Wairarapa or Upper Hutt are good options.

What is the population of Wellington?

Wellington is New Zealand's second biggest city in New Zealand. The population of Greater Wellington in June 2019 was 424,000 people. Of this, 98 per cent of the population live in an urban area.
