If you’re moving to Sydney to get the most out of the coast, here are the places with the best stretches of sand.

    1. Bondi Beach The most famous of all Sydney beaches is undoubtedly Bondi. A popular tourist hot spot and, of course, a favourite amongst locals, the golden sands and exhilarating surf is what makes Bondi Beach so iconic.
Aside from attempting the rolling waves, the area is lined with cafes and surf shops to enjoy. Follow Bronte Coastal Walk for a winding view of the coastline at angles you can’t truly experience from the shore.

    1. Manly Beach Manly Beach is a tranquil inner-harbour beach coupled with a popular surf beach. At Manly Beach, you will find a laid back beach vibe with sophisticated places to dine and endless shopping. Considerably close to the CBD, Manly’s stretch of sand along the ocean-side runs all the way to Queenscliff Beach to North Steyne Beach. For those who are looking to try out surfing, the beach gets smooth waves making it excellent grounds for beginners.

    1. North Curl Curl Beach Curl Curl is known to be one of Sydney’s best surfing beaches. With an average of 1.6-metre waves, the beach is a great spot for skilled surfers. It faces the east-southeast and has a beach that spans 1.2 km along. It’s divided into North and South Curl Curl beach where you can find a child-friendly ocean experience, cafes and swimming pool.

    1. Narrabeen Beach With over three kilometres of sand, this is one of Australia’s most iconic swimming and surfing beaches. In 2009 the northern part of the beach was declared a National Surfing Reserve. It has excellent surfing conditions and for those who want more than surfing, there’s an ocean pool and inlet for kids to paddle in.

  1. Maroubra Beach Maroubra is one of the overlooked surf beaches Sydney has on offer, but if you’re a pro-surfer, this is definitely where you want to be. At Maroubra, surfers will experience the full force of waves driven by an east or north-easterly swell as the beach opens to the great Pacific Ocean. As a tip, surf on the south end where it’s generally less crowded.

Take Care When Packing Your Surfboard

When packing, for a day trip or a permanent relocation, it’s essential that you properly pack and protect your surfboard.

Here are some tips and steps to keep in mind to minimise the risk of damage during your move to Sydney or trip to one of the above beaches.

  1. Use a heavy-duty board bag that’s appropriate to the size of your board. Get one with thick foam padding on the inside and when choosing a size, choose one that is 15 to 20 cm longer than your board so you have space for additional cushioning.
  2. Make sure your board is clean and smooth by removing any old wax.
  3. Always remove fins when packing and travelling. Use foam pipe insulation and cut only a single side straight down and duct tape them to the rails. Make sure they are packed away securely.
  4. Like what you did for the fins, do the same for the nose and tail of your board because these are usually the high-risk areas that are prone to nicks and damage. For added peace of mind, protect the deck and bottom of your board as well.
  5. For additional protection, bubble wrap is good at protecting your board. Not only is it lightweight but it cushions the board from impacts very well. This is especially beneficial if you’re moving a long distance, where your board may be in transit for a great length of time.
  6. You may also choose to cover your board with towels and your wetsuit. Not only will it give you a chance to pack other materials away, it will also serve as a layer of additional protection for your board.
  7. As a reminder, make sure to tag your board with “FRAGILE” or “HANDLE WITH CARE” so staff and movers know to apply more care.
