Celebrating years of service awards!
It is not uncommon for our Wridgways employees to celebrate significant years of service with the company. This year we have another addition, Harry Windley who is proudly celebrating the wonderful milestone of 35 years with Wridgways! Some know it has actually been much longer than that (over 40 years) since first starting in Melbourne in 1969 as a casual worker in our garage, situated opposite the original Head Office in Auburn.
When Harry first began at Wridgways the managing director was the wonderful Mr Bert (Herbert) Wridgway. His roles at Wridgways are extensive including: Townsville Branch Manager, Ansett Freight Express Townsville, TNT Car Carrying Townsville, North Queensland Regional Manager, New Furniture Distribution and now Wridgways Project Management National Manager.
Given his long service you’d expect this to be Harry’s first job, but no – after 5 years in the Printing Industry as a Fourth Generation employee Harry met his beautiful wife and decided to break the mould, spending two years travelling around Australia by car and a 7 metre caravan with the first of their very young children. Returning to Melbourne in October 1969, that’s when he met up with the Wridgways Team!
During his first stint at the Auburn garage Harry’s responsibilities included picking up new trucks and equipment and delivering these to local Branches as well as fitting out many of our very early metal framed home packs. Soon receiving a telegram offering a very new training opportunity with Wridgways, he was eventually appointed to Branch Manager of Townsville. Additional training was undertaken in Canberra, Cooma and Brisbane Branches before taking over Townsville in October 1971. â€œBack then we did not have mobile phones, so all communication with my Branch had to be via public phone booth or Mount Isa and Rockhampton offices. More accolades to mention include the opening of both our Cairns and Mackay Branches and growing the Torres Strait islands/Weipa areas. Moving to Brisbane and into our new Division called Wridgways New Furniture Division, now called Wridgways Project Management in 1995, Harry is currently our National Projects Manager.
Particularly standing out to Harry was “the early days when our subcontractors used to handle the Interstate relocations door-to-door, I was able to direct load trailers from Townsville to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and even Perth. We were the only large removalist in Australia who operated in this manner on a regular basis! Naturally, the clients were overjoyed with having the same subcontractor, who had packed and uplifted their furniture and personal effects, delivering direct to their destination.” He has certainly made the most of the many opportunities provided to grow the business and try out/ introduce new services. Not to mention being lucky enough to have the pleasure of seeing his son achieve 30 years plus with Wridgways this year also!
We congratulate Harry on this magnificent achievement, he is highly regarded by all who know him within the Wridgways family and we sincerely look forward to many more years with Harry in the future!
