When you arrive

Quarantine and clearance

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) calculates fees on a cost-recovery basis and you may be charged for services including border clearance inspections, vet inspections and travel costs for MPI inspectors.

Cats and dogs that arrive from Australia do not need to be quarantined. If a cat or dog is arriving from another country, New Zealand requires that they are quarantined for at least 10 days in a MPI-approved quarantine facility. If you require a pet to be quarantined, you will need to contact the individual quarantine facility for their associated fees and charges.

There may be a need to put a cat or dog from Australia into quarantine on arrival in New Zealand if:

  • they are unwell or have ticks or fleas
  • they arrive outside inspection hours

Usually if you are coming from Australia with a dog or cat you do not need a permit, but your pet will need a post-arrival inspection. Charges for vet inspection for imported pets that do not require a vet inspection is a fixed fee of $57.05NZ (including GST). If your pet requires an inspection the hourly rate of $214.25NZ (including GST) will be charged.

If you have a pet that does require a permit, costs including GST are $220.74NZ.
