How to prepare for international relocation

It takes a lot of organising to move to another country. You have to pack up all your belongings, find international removalists, and make sure your paperwork is all up-to-date. There is so much involved that it can be easy to forget things. If you need help preparing to move to another country, this guide will give you all the tips and tricks you need.

Are you moving overseas? Let WridgWays help you out!

Where to start

It can seem overwhelming when you first start planning to move abroad. You have a lot to get organised in a short period of time. To begin it’s a good idea to create to-do list, or check out our moving checklist for key considerations.

Moving overseas from Australia is a pretty big deal and you probably don’t want to take all your belongings with you. This means you’ll need to sort through everything and work out what you want to keep and what you don’t. The things you don’t want to keep you can throw out, sell, or donate to a local charity.

You then need to start sourcing removalists to help you move to another country. Make sure you find a company who is accredited by the Australian Furniture Removers Association (AFRA). This will ensure they have the correct training, premises, and equipment in place to carry out moves.

How to pack

Packing your belongings to move to another country is a delicate process. You don’t want to break your precious items or find them damaged when you reach your destination. It is a massive undertaking on your own, and generally it’s better to use experienced removalists. These movers will know the best way to pack your belongings to keep them safe. They’ll also have the necessary equipment and packing materials to look after your goods.

If you choose to pack yourself then make sure you know what you’re doing. Use professional packing boxes to store your items. Pack the heaviest items in the smallest boxes, and the lightest items in the larger boxes. This will prevent the boxes from breaking during transit.

When packing a shipping container up, try and maximise your space as much as possible. Pack the heaviest items on the bottom and the lightest on the top. Start at the back and move forward until you have filled the space as much as possible.

What to prepare

When moving overseas there is a lot that you need to prepare. Make sure hold a valid passport while shopping around for flights. You will also need to organise visas.Depending on where you are moving to, you’ll need to work out what kind of visa you need.

If you are working you will most likely need a working visa. Without it you may not be allowed to work at your destination.

It is also important to notify your providers before moving overseas from Australia. This means notifying the ATO, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the electoral commission, and the embassy in your host country. You may also want to arrange to have your mail redirected and your utilities disconnected from your old home.

Settling in

It can be hard to adjust to a new culture, so take your time to relax in the first few weeks. Try some of the local cuisine and explore your new home. If you have never visited before this can be a very exciting time. Get to know the local public transport if you don’t have a car and meetup with any friends, family, or contacts you have in the area.

If you don’t know anyone, you may want to find some local meetups. Get involved in the culture by finding out how the locals spend their time. There might be a dancing group that meets up once a week, or a sporting club you can join. This will not only be a good way to meet new people but also a good way to learn more about the culture.

Once you’re past these first few hurdles it’s time to focus on other important issues. You may have paperwork that you need to complete now that you’ve arrived. If you want to drive you’ll need to apply for an international driver’s license. You may also need to open a new bank account if your old one doesn’t service your new country.

Moving overseas from Australia doesn’t have to be hard with the best international removalists. At WridgWays, we strive to make your move easy.
