A move to a new city can be daunting. Where do you start? If you are relocating to Auckland, you are moving to one of New Zealand's most cosmopolitan and vibrant cities.

Auckland is one of the most expensive places to live in New Zealand and has a highly competitive property market, so it pays to be prepared during your home search. Some of the more popular suburbs in Auckland include:

Historic village with city views

Devonport is a historic suburb (one of the oldest settlements in Auckland) and is a popular option for expats. It has a village feel, with many cafes, bars, and restaurants, all within an easy commute to the CBD. It sits on a peninsula and has two volcanic peaks, all offering spectacular views of the Auckland skyline. Housing ranges from cottages and early villas, to Edwardian homes, to modern apartments.

Vibrant beachside location

Takapuna is a suburb which you will find the highly rated Takapuna Grammar School, local shops, playgrounds, an abundance of restaurants and cafes, all within stone's throw of the beach. You can find large modern homes on suburban blocks, suitable for families, or beachside apartment living for professionals. The closer you are to the water, the more you will be paying in rent or to buy a property. The suburb is a short drive and easy commute to reach the CBD, yet far enough away that it retains a laid-back atmosphere.

One of Auckland's oldest suburbs

Howick is a seaside suburb with a 30-minute commute to the CBD. It is one of the oldest areas in Auckland, has a Historical Village, and you can find colonial buildings throughout the suburb. There are many schools and sporting clubs in this welcoming community, so is a popular choice for families looking for a quiet life in a beautiful location.

Highly sought after with a central location

Parnell is in a central location and is highly sought after by families and professionals. The high housing prices reflect this. Given its proximity to the city, Parnell Village offers high-end shops, cafes and restaurants, and retains a pleasant feel. Public transport links to the CBD are excellent, and if you feel the need, you can walk to the waterfront. You can find everything from family houses to penthouses in this elite location!

Future eco-centre

Located 13 km west of the CBD is proving a popular choice for millennials who are looking for affordable housing, good public transport options, and the ability to walk to nearby amenities. The suburb is home to the Waitakere Hospital, one of the most sustainable buildings in New Zealand, and there is a focus to develop Henderson town centre to become a sustainable eco-centre.

Housing is more affordable in this suburb, and is popular with first home buyers and those in search of good investment opportunity. Houses, townhouses and residential units are in abundance.

If you're ready to move to Auckland, you'll find somewhere suitable to live in no time.
