Darwin has an interesting history for a small city.
Its traditional owners are the Larrakia (saltwater) people.
In 1839, Lt. John Lort Stokes named the harbour Port Darwin after Charles Darwin (although Darwin himself never visited). The original settlement was named Palmerston in 1869, but was renamed Darwin in 1911. It became a city in 1959 given the growth of the economy and population.
Between February 1942 and October 1943, Darwin had over 60 air raids. The first of these air raids killed more than 243 people.
Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin on Christmas morning 1974. Sixty-six people died, and many more were injured. Following the cyclone, the Darwin Reconstruction Commission (DRC) formed to help the city to rebuild.
