Learn about Castlemaine
Castlemaine is a small city in Victoria. It is less than 90 minutes north west of Melbourne and around 40 kilometres from the major provincial centre of Bendigo. There are many stunning villages and towns nearby, so Castlemaine is an ideal place to visit and explore Central Victoria.
Being one of the gold-mining towns in Victoria, Castlemaine’s building is unique from others. The architecture style in Castlemaine is Georgian, while other places are Victorian style. This is because Castlemaine was the earliest of gold discovery and the gold being mostly alluvial, so it ran out quicker than other areas. Other places like Bendigo and Ballarat’s, their gold lasted much longer, so their wealth enabled them to renovate their Georgian buildings to Victorian ones.
Festivals and Events
There are many artistic festivals and events throughout the year. In March, you can attend Arts Open or Castlemaine State Festival to experience the art spirit. In June, Castlemaine Jazz Festival is held to showcase a range of jazz style. In October, Castlemaine Show and Festival of Gardens are waiting for you. Others include Maldon Folk Festival and Fryerstown Antique Fair.
The largest industries in Castlemaine include food manufacturing and tourism. The biggest company even employs 900 employees. It is not surprised that tourism is an important industry in Castlemaine due to its rich history, historic art gallery, museum, theatre and gardens.
