Compared to other Victorian suburbs, Sunbury is relatively safe. Around 93% of local residents feel safe walking alone in the area, and rates of family violence are much lower here than in other areas of Victoria. VicRoads is also currently improving the safety of the roads in the region, particularly along Sunbury Road between the Tullamarine Freeway and Oaklands Road.
Sunbury was originally occupied by the Wurundjeri people, and later grew once the European settler George Evans established a sheep station in 1836. His homestead, which was built that year, now forms the basis of the Emu Bottom homestead, which is one of the oldest extant homesteads in Victoria. Sunbury is also home to Rupertswood Mansion, the birthplace of The Ashes.
If you are an avid wine drinker then you may be interested in the many wineries located in the Sunbury region. The CraigLee Vineyard, which is only a four minute walk from the Sunbury train station, is known for its award-winning Shiraz and Chardonnay wines, and is open to the public on the first Sunday of the month.
The Organ Pipes National Park is only fifteen minutes away from the Sunbury centre. Featuring a natural amphitheatre that resembles a cathedral organ, you can explore the natural rock formations or take a walk through the bushland, enjoying the scenic views and Australian wildlife. The national park covers 121 hectares, so there is plenty of land to keep you occupied.
