Learn about Weipa

Things to do

Although it is fairly isolated, Weipa still hosts a variety of activities for all members of the family to enjoy. You can explore further up Cape York and take a picture at northern-most point of Australia, or spend some time fishing in the pristine creeks and rivers in the Weipa Region. If you’re up for an adventure, you can travel up to the Jardine River National Park, where there are several breathtaking waterfalls and creeks to swim in.

Weipa is well known for its mining industry, with Rio Tinto owning and operating the Weipa bauxite mine which covers around 3,860 square kilometres of the western Cape York region. As well as providing many job opportunities for the locals, Rio Tinto also contributes significantly to the local economy through its investments in local infrastructure.

The community of Weipa is vibrant, with a rich Aboriginal culture ingrained in the society. The people of this small town are very friendly, and depending on the time of the year you will find many tourists stopping through on the way to the tip of Australia.

Given the size of the town, the variety of dining options available is impressive. With cafes, restaurants, bars, and takeaway joints, you are sure to find an option to suit your tastes. For the seafood lovers out there, Weipa has some of the freshest seafood around, so try one of the local restaurants or catch your own, if you can.
