Helpful information about the UK:
Currency – There are 100 pence (p) to the pound (£). Notes come in denominations of £5, £10, £20 and £50. Coins come in 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and £2. You will usually hear people say “pee” rather than pence in the UK; as in 50p (50 pee). A pound is often referred to as “quid”, a five-pound note is a “fiver” and ten-pound note a “tenner”.
Language – The languages spoken in the UK range from English, Welsh, Gaelic, Scots, the most commonly spoken language is of course English.
The UK population – The UK is a densely populated country comprising of 63.2 million people, many of which live in the south of the UK. About 90 % of the UK’s population consists of city dwellers. The country’s ‘capital boasts 8.17 million inhabitants and is by far the largest city in the UK. Great parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland are less urbanised, with more and more people moving away to UK’s southern areas.
Important Quarantine restrictions – Certain goods are prohibited or restricted from entering the UK to protect the safety, health and environment. These rules apply to all travellers. There are restrictions on cigarettes, alcohol, gifts and products of animal origin. These depend on where you are travelling from. Further restrictions are placed on bringing meat, food and plant products, to help reduce the risk of pests and diseases entering the country.
