Stepping Into the Extraordinary – A House Made of 31 Shipping Containers
Now here’s something you don’t see every day! Talk about a grand design.
Continuing in the growing trend of properties built using environmentally friendly, recycled materials; builder Todd Miller has taken this to a whole new level!
Shipping containers are usually used to ship personal effects of course, but this incredible Brisbane property has been built using 31 unused shipping containers. Wow. This is a one-off custom-made design by experienced builder Todd.
Spreading over three levels, glass is featured throughout the home to provide natural light and a mix of materials, including the signature containers, cleverly used to industrial chic effect. If you’re thinking, won’t the place get hot, given the shipping containers are providing the foundations of the house, don’t worry he’s got that covered too. The home is fully insulated for climate control. There are four bedrooms positioned over two levels. Outdoor spaces are spread throughout, maximizing the tropical climate. Other features include a mezzanine reading room, a pull out queen wall bed in the rumpus room, an art study, workshop, gym space, water tank and saltwater pool all incorporating the shipping container materials. Amazing!
The only other similar house in Australia ever built, was using only five shipping containers.
With the advantage of using recycled shipping containers being extremely environmentally credit worthy, will this be the next craze in home design in Australia? We’d love to know what you think.
